Ubud
Ambitiously referred to as the 'real' Bali, this town situated on the way up into the mountains is more correctly the cultural centre of Bali. Made famous by expatriate artists waxing lyrical about it's beauty and promoting art in the town last century, Ubud is now a large town that acts as the centre of much of the island's famous handicrafts, art, dance and culinary activities - the food here is considered the best in Bali. The streets are peppered with art galleries, museums and craft stores. Do not expect to party hard here - this is a cultural town and most of the bars close by 1.00pm.
Art and Rice Fields
Visits to art museums, craft shops and dance shows are not the only things to do in Ubud. The Monkey Forest Sanctuary makes a jungle change whilst the scenic hillside around the town hides some great walking trails that meander through nearby villages. Ubud is also a good launch pad for explorations further into the hill region.
