Notre Dame Cathedral
Notre Dame Cathedral is situated in Paris Square, in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. A French priest set down the first brick for construction on October 1877 and the last one in April 1880. The cathedral was built in accordance with specific designs and drawings. Arrangements made with France required that the construction work be managed by a French engineer named Baurad. The total cost of the construction was 2.5 million francs. In front of the cathedral in a small garden is a delicate statue of the Virgin Mary. The interior of the cathedral is rather plain, unlike most French cathedrals, with no stained glass but it is a cool escape from the heat outside.
